Isuikwuato Lawmaker Lambasts Stone Crushing Companies, Citing Non-compliance to Corporate Social Responsibility Guidelines


The Member, Isuikwuato State Constituency in the Abia State House of Assembly, Hon Lucky Udoka Nweke Johnson has expressed dissatisfaction on the activities of operators of Quarry Sites in the Constituency as regards it’s negative contributions to environmental degradation.

Interfacing with the Quarry Manager, Setraco Stone Crushing Company Ugwuele, Uturu, Mr Romanus Anaewokhai at the quarry site during an On the Spot Assessment visit,Hon Lucky Johnson Nweke reminded the stone crushing company that the blasting of stones by the outfit does not only affect the immediate environment but has contributed to earth shift and it’s impacts, a contributing factor to earth weakening, which is human induced, leading to degradation of the environment and it’s resultant gully erosions, which has adversely affected the entirety of Isuikwuato State Constituency.

The Isuikwuato Lawmaker regretted the visible lack of synergy between Setraco Stone Crushing Company and the Local Government, reminding that Uturu does not exist in isolation of Isuikwuato Local Government.

Contributing, the Mayor, Isuikwuato Local Government, Air Vice Marshall Chinwendu Onyike RTD reminded Setraco Stone Crushing Company that the much talked about Environmental Impact Assessment cannot be same for the 21 years of their operations in Isuikwuato Local Government given the visible wear and tear which has impacted negatively on the entirety of the Local Government, frowning at the visible disrespect and disregard to the Authority of Isuikwuato Local Government.

The Quarry Manager Setraco Stone Crushing Company, Mr Romanus Anaewokhai in his response said their operations in Ugwuele has been smooth and cordial which Hon Lucky Johnson Udoka Nweke vehemently debunked, citing empirical evidence.

Still during the interface, separately, Mr Zaid Khalil of Asphalt Nigeria Limited said attempts have been made by a sister company to use intimidating means to hound them out of the Constituency when they have gainfully employed over 200 indigenes of Isuikwuato Local Government as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility.

Meanwhile Quarry Managers of Setraco Stone Crushing Company and Asphalt Nigeria Limited have been invited by the Abia State House of Assembly Committee on Environment for further Legislative interface to forestall frictions.
